We are not certain if what happens in these lines is a game or not. How does the writer create this
sense of uncertainty?
Think about:
• what the girls do;
• what they say;
• how their father reacts.
Firstly the uncertainty of Jennie not replying to her Father’s question “what are you reading” is a question built in the readers mind. It places the question is her behaviour, towards her dad because of a game or is she really not pleased with seeing her Dad.
Secondly In the incident between Kate and the Dog shows that there is some sense aggressiveness in her senses and she is unable to cope with it, which is why she takes her anger out on “Snort” by “kicking” it. Kate’s remark “Go away.” Is worthy of attention because this shows that there is something bothering her. This still makes it uncertain if their attitude is because of a game or not. To emphasise the uncertainty of their activities the writer creates a mood and atmosphere where two small children are chasing their dog around and trying to fight with it. The writer implies that it is more of a game because the girls are “laughing”. The contrast created between their moods at present as opposed to the start is high because their sad and aggressive attitude has converted into a playful one; this is proven through their “laughter”. Although their actions may seem violent, “snatching anything they could find to throw at the fugitive” it is seen as a descent playful activity.
Thirdly the mood of the two girls again cycles back to their aggressive behaviour when Jane “tries to hook the dog by the collar” using a “rake”. This is terribly dangerous as it could’ve cut or hurt the Snort. Although this is dangerous, it may seem ok to be done in game play, because the girls may be unaware of the consequence of playing with a “rake”. This mixture of a game of war and aggressive behaviour creates a sense of uncertainty through the readers point of view, because it can be interpreted in 2 ways.
Moreover the constant name calling by the two; “paleface” and their bursting “shouts of laughter” gives another reason why it may only be a game. the two girls “staggering with laughter” at their bad deed, go and try to commit another one. The biased fight between the two girls and their father shows that they may only be playing around but when it states that he was vigorously grabbed by the collar as if being “strangled”, it suggest that there may be something wrong between their relationship which is causing her to take revenge for something.
In addition, when Robert has been “bitten” by Snort, Jane gains conscious of her actions and tries to heal what she had caused. The fact that Kate was still laughing suggest that she does not know what is right or wrong which may be the cause of her previous violent actions. Usually if a brutal incident occurs in a game the game is left and the incident is dealt with. This is what is going on in this story yet there was no explanation for their ignorant behaviour at the start.
